grrraaand Gus Englehorn has this amazing sensitivity and imagination that reminds me a bit of Elliott Smith in a way. His voice and lyrics are a national treasure (should be applying as UNESCO world heritage), the whole album makes me wanna run, laugh and scream at the same time. Good job Mr Englehorn. Favorite track: Patty Sees Her Soul.

Those who have heard the holy word The Holy Spirit And those who fear it Get me out of here There on a string of islands The scent of roses gathered in the air Beware the spacious entrance There are some things That are worse but not that many The year that grandpa went to heaven you left the town again Oh what big shoes to fill Get me out of here We gathered in the valley In the valley darkness gathered all around us Behold the narrow path There are some things I deserve but not that many All those years in the belly of the seven you brought me back again Oh what a bitter pill Get me out of here My own paradise My own paradise No I don't want yours My own paradise My own paradise So get me out of here So get me out of here

Stay Little 02:14
An idea for a video A piece of plexiglass with a camera behind it And you put dirt and other objects on the glass And there is a man in white pants leaning against a telephone pole blowing up balloons And it's about how much you want to feel it And it's about how much you need to feel it And it's about how somewhere in between it Their expressions there reveal it I want to stay down inside my house Stay inside and never go out Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little An idea for a video Two cops on stake out And one says to the other ''watch that man'' And then the camera pans and you're in a little girl's birthday party and she is just brushing her hair in the mirror And it's about how much you need to feel it And it's about how much you try and feel it And it's about how much you want to feel it And it's about how much you have to feel it I want to stay down inside my hometown Stay anonymous and never get famous Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little Stay little An idea for a video

Do do do you have to see it With your own eyes to believe it Do do do you really mean it When you say you don't believe it Ride our bikes out through the night Everybody says it's right Everybody says it's paradise Digging holes in our best clothes Fill them back up straight as arrows Everybody knows we found paradise She never really ever really Never really ever really Never really ever really Never really ever really thought of it before Thought of it before Now Patty sees her soul Yeah now Patty sees her soul Ha ha ha ha holidays are on their way to where I can't say Tossed and turned the night away The shadows play we hit the hay And when I slept so late at night Of it I dreamt not imprecise but of the clearest paradise And now I really want to go but they say it's wise to go slow And everybody knows it's good advice She never really ever really Never really ever really Never really ever really Never really ever really thought of it before Thought of it before Now Patty sees her soul Yeah now Patty sees her soul Patty sees her soul Patty sees her soul Patty sees her soul Patty sees her soul Patty sees her soul Patty sees her soul Patty sees her soul Patty sees her soul

Okavanga 02:14
I was walking by the Okavanga Dyke Swarm There were dogs chasing leopards and hunting them down and I was walking by the winding river I was curious The alligators' breeding pit was empty and abandoned I was walking by the Okavanga Dyke Swarm When deep in the desert I came upon a spring To keep warm my eyes see want they want to see When my eyes see what they want to see Hell Hell Hell Hell I was walking by the Okavanga Dyke Swarm The day decayed by five and the night came alive The cannonball manufactures the leather wings of the New Jersey Devil and the packs of dogs that track them.
5.
Dead Swan 02:24
A dead swan looked down at me I could see through a hole in his wing Turned his head began to sing Ahh ahh ahh ah ahh ahh ahh aha aha But it was just a dream When I wake up and scream And until my dreams are still I do not decide How to say goodnight How to say goodnight A dead swan looked down at me I could hear every word through his teeth Turned me there his violent stare Now I'm rolling on the river but the ferry isn't free But it was just a dream When I wake up and scream And until my dreams are still I do not decide How to say goodnight How to say goodnight

Visions 03:36
Living in the relative ease Of affluence It's a breeze To breathe to be me But lately I've been longing to believe My whole life Is just one Big bad dream I'll come back again I'll find out the truth in the end I'll see far into the past I'll find out the truth at last I'll watch all the years go by And I swear nothing else catches my eye And I'll see far into the past Then I'll find out the truth at last Thinking of the great mystery While old Johnny works And while he does he sings And lately I've been longing to believe Like old Johnny who tends the fence Around the grounds I'll come back again I'll find out the truth in the end I'll see far into the past I'll find out the truth at last I'll watch all the years go by And I swear nothing else catches my eye And I'll see far into the past Then I'll find out the truth at last That everybody's better than me That everybody's better than me That everybody's longing to believe That everybody's better than me And that's it

Collarbone 02:20
You broke my collarbone I said ''aaahaaa'' Cut my finger to the bone I said '' aaahaaa'' And I saw a vision of your face floating by You broke my collarbone I said ''uhmmm'' And it got me Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about you You broke my collarbone I said ''aaahaaa'' You walked out and never came home I said ''aaahaaa'' Then I thought I saw you standing there Underneath the eave You broke my collarbone I said ''uhmmm'' And it got me Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about you Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and I keep Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about Thinking about you

Johnny Colt 03:30
Johnny Colt's arms rest folded tight across his chest lips blue and he doesn't move Another one gone last night who didn't put up much a fight Well that's the price you pay for being cool And everyone that knew him they only thought they knew him But no one really ever had a clue So Johnny Colt's arms rest folded tight across his chest lips blue and he doesn't move He crawled out of his own skin Said he been in there for a long time Said he was so glad Just to see the sun Johnny Colt's arms rest folded tight across his chest lips blue and he doesn't move Thin they called him matchstick boy, played with him like a toy They found out no one really is immune And everyone that knew him they only thought they knew him But he was only ever passing through through So Johnny Colt's arms rest folded tight across his chest lips blue and he doesn't move He crawled out of his own skin Said he been in there for a long time Said he was so glad Just to see the sun he said Everywhere I'll hear the sound Rotten peaches Rotting on the ground I’ll sit and stare at them all afternoon The constellation forms a question, an idea of heaven Just to see the sun Just to see the sun Just to see the sun

Transform 03:29
Now you see me Now you don't I had an out of body experience when I was a child I was up on the ceiling I thought of nothing for a while And my mother was there My brother was there My mother was there My brother was there I had an out of body experience when I was a child All my worries and cares went out the window for a while And my mother was there My brother was there My mother was there My brother was there My mother was scared My brother was scared My mother was scared My brother was scared Now you see me Now you don't My heart’s like a little machine that never really ever really beats slowly And gets me all worked up It's just like a little fiend that never really ever really can get enough And gets me all worked up I went out through the window Up passed the tree tops Far above ground Where I could see my friends playing Well I heard them saying Gus come back down And my mother was there my brother was there my mother was there my brother was there I had an out of body experience while lying in bed And I could hear choirs singing Well I heard bells ringing I lifted my head And my mother was there My brother was there My mother was there My brother was there My mother was scared My brother was scared My mother was scared My brother was scared And my mother was there My brother was there My mother was there My brother was there My mother was scared My brother was scared My mother was scared My brother was scared

about

''Sometimes, the most instant way to connect is through disconnect, the weirdness drawing you in. The lyrics of Gus Englehorn are like snippets from surrealist short stories, the darkish DIY delivery sustaining a fantastical atmosphere.'' -Francesca Rose at Atwood Magazine
